Death toll rises to 30 following Russia's massive attack on Kyiv

 


Ukraine's capital woke up to devastation this week after Russia unleashed what officials are calling the deadliest assault on Kyiv since the war began. Overnight into Thursday, Moscow's forces fired hundreds of drones alongside dozens of missiles — including advanced Zircon and Iskander ballistic weapons — targeting residential neighborhoods across the city. By Friday morning, the confirmed death toll had climbed to 30, with more than 90 people wounded and rescue crews still combing through the rubble of collapsed apartment blocks.

Eyewitnesses described a night of terror as explosions echoed across the skyline and residents scrambled into underground metro stations and bomb shelters. Thick plumes of black smoke rose over the city as emergency responders worked through the darkness to pull survivors from beneath collapsed buildings. In one of the hardest-hit districts, an entire section of a nine-story apartment building was torn apart, destroying dozens of homes in a single strike.

Ukraine's air defense units say they intercepted the vast majority of the incoming threats, but a portion of the ballistic missiles and drones still broke through, striking an ambulance station, a scientific research institute, a hotel, and several other civilian sites. Beyond Kyiv, additional strikes hit the Sumy and Zaporizhzhia regions, adding to the night's casualty count.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault as a deliberate attack on ordinary civilians and vowed that Ukraine would respond. He also renewed his appeal to NATO allies for stronger air-defense support, warning that Kyiv's stockpile of intercepting missiles is running dangerously low. City authorities have declared a day of mourning, and humanitarian organizations report significant losses, including the destruction of a major aid warehouse.

The attack marks a sharp escalation at a moment when the world's attention has increasingly shifted to diplomatic efforts elsewhere in global hotspots. It underscores how, even as ceasefire talks and peace initiatives dominate headlines in other regions, the war in Ukraine continues to inflict a heavy human toll with no clear resolution in sight.
